I had a severe staph ingection in my CSF and had to be rushed to the ER. Dr. Disch was the on-call neurosurgeon and when he assessed me, he immediately admitted me and rushed me to surgery. While being wheeled down the hall to surgery, all my monitors startwd going crazy and he said we weten't gonna make it to surgery. We stopped in the hall, he puahed my gurney against the wall and proceeded to do an emergency burr hole in my skull to relieve the pressure right there while I was wide awake using only a local anesthetic, a scalpel, and a cordless drill. I could hear the drill going thru my skull, but as soon as it was thru and the fluid pressure was released, all my machines went back to normal and they wheeled me into the surgical suite to finish my shunt externalization.
If he hadn't done what he did, I was told I wouldn't have made it till morning.
I flatlined twice during surgery, but, thankfully, he had the skills to back up his bravado. Or I wouldn't be here.
